Differentiation of Proteinuria by Micro Slab Gel Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate-Polyacrylamide Gel Electrophoresis in Primary Glomerular Disease

|
Differentiation of proteinuria can provide a very useful noninvasive method to evaluate a renal disease. SDS-PAGE can differentiate proteinuria according to their molecular size. We studied 58 patients with primary glomerular diseases using newly developed micro slab gel SDS-PAGE.
Among 58 patients, there were 32 patients with selective glomerular proteinuria, 12 patients with unselective glomerular proteinuria and 14 patients with mixed glomerulo-tubular proteinuria. Correlation between differentiation of proteinuria and clinical presentation, clinical parameters including blood pressure, proteinuria, hematuria, serum albumin level and serum creatinine level and clinical response to corticosteroid therapy were compared. It revealed statistically significant differences in clinical presentation, hematuria and serum albumin level.
Although the above results suggest that micro slab gel SDS-PAGE-is a sensitive and simple method to differentiate proteinuria, more investigation is needed for its use in clinical practice.
